Graylands Hospital
Graylands Hospital is the state’s only public psychiatric teaching hospital, delivering mental health acute care and rehabilitation services for adults. The hospital is an authorised inpatient mental health tertiary hospital with 121 beds for the care of youths, adults and older adults with mental illness. This consists of 54 acute beds and 67 Hospital Extended Stay Beds.
Services provided by Graylands Hospital are targeted at people aged 18 to 65 years with a mental illness. The Hospital provides voluntary and involuntary short-term inpatient management during an acute phase of mental illness until sufficient recovery allows the person to be treated effectively in a community-based setting. Inpatient care is also provided for those patients who have long-term mental illness under the Hospital Extended Care Service (HECS). The two distinct care pathways are integrated with community mental health services to allow people to receive the level of treatment that they require for their illness at any given time. Mental health services will be person centred, focusing on evidence-based treatment which is culturally and spiritually sensitive to individual needs.
To meet national and WA mental health reforms, moving from traditional inpatient care to more contemporary care in a person’s home, the number of beds on the hospital grounds has decreased over time. By decreasing the number of beds, patients have been given better opportunities to recover.
The announcement of the WA Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drug Services Plan 2015-25 indicated the intention for mental health services to be transitioned off the Graylands Hospital site over the duration of the plan. Changes will be subject to agreement by the Western Australian Government.
Co-located on the Graylands Health Campus is the State Forensics Mental Health Service which includes the Frankland Centre, a maximum secured inpatient facility, for people with mental illness within the state’s judicial system.
