Choose Wisely

Choosing Wisely is a global movement promoting important conversations about unnecessary tests, treatments and procedures. It encourages health care staff and patients to begin questioning practices that evidence shows have no benefit or in some cases can actually lead to harm.

Every patient is different and asking your doctor questions before you have any tests, treatments or procedures will help them make sure you get the care that is best for you.

A set of five questions have been developed as a guide to ask your doctor:

  1. Do I really need this test, treatment or procedure?

It is important that you understand the purpose of why a test, treatment or procedure is being recommended.

  2. What are the risks?

There may be risks, side effects and an increased chance of needing more tests, treatment or another procedure.

  3. Are there simpler, safer options?

It’s important to investigate with your doctor all options available to you. There may also be lifestyle changes that may help alongside other treatments.

  4. What happens if I do nothing?

Ask if your condition may get worse or better if you don’t have the test, treatment or procedure.

  5. How long will it take me to recover?

This relates to any procedures you may need as recovery times can vary. Ask what is involved in the recovery process.

Always remember; it’s okay to ask.
