Voluntary Assisted Dying

At North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS), our vision is to provide excellent health care to our community at every stage of life, including at the end of life. We are committed to delivering high-quality, person-centred care that respects each person’s values, dignity, and choices.

We recognise that decisions at the end of life are deeply personal. If you are exploring Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD), we aim to ensure you feel heard, supported, and treated with compassion and respect throughout the process.

How NMHS supports people considering VAD

Our approach to VAD is guided by the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2019 (WA) and focuses on clear information, thoughtful planning, and coordinated care.

NMHS will:

  • Provide access to information
Support you to seek information about VAD, including eligibility, the assessment process, likely timeframes, and what to expect, so you can make informed decisions.
  • Offer coordinated care
If you choose to access VAD as an inpatient, or while receiving outpatient care at an NMHS site, we will provide a planned, coordinated, and respectful approach. This care is designed to support you, your family, and the staff involved.
  • Support patients and families
A dedicated NMHS VAD Coordinator is available to help coordinate care, provide guidance, and support patients, families, and clinicians throughout the VAD process.
  • Respect diverse views
NMHS respects the rights and beliefs of all staff. Care is delivered in a way that is respectful of conscientious objection while ensuring patients can still access lawful and appropriate care.\

Our commitment to you

Throughout your journey, NMHS is committed to ensuring that end-of-life care — including VAD — is approached with sensitivity, dignity, and respect. We aim to work alongside you, your loved ones, and your care team to support your choices and provide compassionate care at this important time.

Unsure where to start

If you would like information about Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD), or if you are unsure whether you are receiving care under NMHS, we encourage you to contact us. Our team can provide clear, confidential information about VAD, answer your questions, and help you understand your options. If NMHS is not the right service for you, we will assist by referring you to the appropriate service and ensuring you receive education and support to guide your next steps.
