Our doctors join in ride against domestic violence 14 September 2021 Three doctors from SCGH along with an RPH colleague took part in the 260km Ride Against Domestic Violence event this weekend, together raising over $100K towards refuges for women and children experiencing, or at risk of family and domestic violence. Dr Con Phatouros NIISwa Head of Department, Dr Brendan McQuillan Cardiologist and Dean of UWA medical school and Dr Andrew Thompson Neuroradiologist from SCGH along with Dr Niall Henry, an emergency physician from RPH all took the physical challenge, braving the chilly mornings for the humbling event that heard personal stories along the way. “One of the highlights was the diversity of people participating, from all walks of life, united in drawing a line in the sand against family and domestic violence,” said Con. The importance of sleep 10 September 2021 30-year-old Anntoinette Mario credits her Personal Trainer with insisting she get checked after she was dizzy and short of breath at a gym session last year. Putting it down to shift work and a busy schedule, she’s grateful now to have been referred to the Sleep Disorder Clinic at SCGH for sleep study tests for a firm diagnosis and health plan going forward. “I don’t drive anymore; I’m so tired all the time and I’m scared I’ll hurt someone,” said Anntoinette. “Thank goodness I’m here getting this sorted out while I’m young; I’m grateful to get some treatment.” According to Sleep Scientist Sarah Mutch, women make up about 35% of sleep study patients at SCGH, with the majority coming in for obstructive sleep apnoea, sleep hypo-ventilation or insomnia. “There are lots of other reasons people come too like restless... -
Celebrating our dedicated staff! 03 September 2021 Congratulations to Natalie Strydom from the Security Department who was this week awarded as the NMHS Corporate Employee of the Quarter. While Natalie is the Admin Officer in the department she has often stepped into other roles (often all at the same time) and is an invaluable member of the team. She is known as the ‘Department Mother’, is so helpful to everyone she comes into contact with, and is known to be morally courageous. She is a true NMHS champion and always does the right thing – not the easy thing. At the presentation her team were obviously thrilled for her as she received her certificate and $150 voucher thanks to our sponsors. Rapid Recruitment welcomes 29 in ED 02 September 2021 Across NMHS we have identified a number of strategies to support rapid recruitment while remaining committed to securing the required skilled staff to meet our current demand. We have increased the numbers of permanent nursing positions and we’re attracting new staff to the organisation. Our SCGH Emergency Department is leading the charge in large scale, successful recruitment with 25 new Registered Nurses starting with us next week, as well as four Mental Health Nurses to ensure mental health patients in the ED are able to be cared for by suitably skilled nursing staff. The ED leadership team has come up with creative ways to support this large number of new starters to ensure there is a safe and structured introduction to SCGOPHCG. Welcome to the NMHS family. -
Thanks to NIISwa during Stroke Awareness Week 01 September 2021 This week is National Stroke Week with a focus on the SCGOPHCG Neurological Intervention and Imaging Service of Western Australia (NIISwa) and their incredible work for stroke patients. Getting the best outcomes in stroke is a team effort and NIISwa works very closely with the departments of emergency medicine, imaging, neurology, anaesthesia, neurosurgery, ICU, and the specialty wards. In partnering with St John’s Ambulance and Royal Flying Doctor Service the service has been able to expedite the transfer of stroke victims as quickly as possible to NIISwa centres where a clot retrieval can be performed. Last year the NIISwa team performed approximately 330 emergency stroke clot retrievals for the state, almost one per day, with an estimated 100 patients per year that avoided life-long care and dependency. “The chances of a patient making a good recovery from a severe stroke...
