Speech Pathology Week - Communicating with Confidence 21 August 2020 It is Speech Pathology Week (23-29 August) and the 2020 theme is Communicating with Confidence! There are 1.2 million Australians with communication disability. Speech pathologists like Brittany Vogels, A/Senior Speech Pathologist at SCGH, work with these Australians to provide them with the confidence to communicate. “In Australia today, communication disability remains largely invisible. Unseen and out-of-sight,” Brittany said. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the challenges faced by Australians with communication disability. Celebrating our staff! 13 August 2020 Congratulations to NMHS Development Senior Project Officer Thomas Cianflone on being named NMHS Corporate Employee of the Quarter! Thomas has always shown outstanding dedication to delivering high quality capital works but this was even more evident during the past quarter when he was required to deliver projects relating directly to the COVID-19 response. Thomas maintained a calm and customer-focused attitude despite significant time pressures and increased workload including the expedited delivery of works in D Block as well as the new ED Fast-Track area. Thomas also has a large portfolio of other projects in the planning and delivery phases, for which he has demonstrated excellent customer service under time pressure. A GEM of an evening! 07 August 2020 On Thursday evening the cream of the North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS) crop headed to Harry Perkins at QEII for the inaugural GEM Awards celebration. The Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate and reward high achieving staff who exemplify the values of Care, Respect, Innovation, Teamwork and Integrity in their service. NMHS Board Chair Jim McGinty was MC for the evening and an amazing 52 finalists in ten categories were recognised. The GEM Awards is set to become an annual event and provides a valuable opportunity to showcase the great work being done throughout the NMHS service and celebrate the many exceptional staff that we work alongside. Do it for Darcy - donate blood today 05 August 2020 In a race against time the Keeley family is desperately seeking a bone marrow match for four year old Darcy. His Aunty Kim Keeley, Senior OT at OPH, said despite searching both the national and international registry, there has been no match for beautiful Darc. If you are between 18 and 45 years, particularly male and of Australian and/or Irish and/or European descent please book in at your local Red Cross Lifeblood Clinic 13 14 95 to donate blood or plasma and whilst there also sign up to the ABMDR (bone marrow) registry. Upon arriving at your appointment please let the team know you are there to register with 'Do it for Darcy' and that you would like to also be put on the ABMDR registry. Dental Health Week 3-9 August 01 August 2020 MHPHDS Dental Health Services is supporting Australian Dental Association's Dental Health Week (external site) from 3-9 August, an annual event which aims to make everyone aware of the key things they need to do to keep their teeth and gums healthy. These are: Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Clean between your teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and limit sugar intake. Visit the dentist regularly for check-ups and preventive care. The theme for this year's week is “Hidden Sugar - how much sugar is hiding in your trolley?”. Sugar harms oral health and this Dental Health Week encourages everyone to ‘get sugar savvy’ with three main sugar messages: Consume no more than 6 teaspoons (24 grams) of free sugar per day as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
