Public Health nurturing tomorrow's workforce 13 November 2023 Two students from The University of Western Australia (UWA) are the latest to complete a three-month work placement at the Public Health Service located at the Anita Clayton Centre in Perth. Lauryn Magee and Aniq Alfie are both studying a Masters in Public Health with plans to work in epidemiology when they graduate. Public Health Service Director Jo Fagan said the service has been fortunate to attract Masters of Public Health students from UWA since 2021. "We accommodate one to two students per year for a three month practicum. They receive exposure to a real work environment, while we get the opportunity to work with the students and hear about their ideas to solve some of our issues," Jo said. New artwork provides spark at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital 24 October 2023 A recently commissioned artwork behind R Block at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital has brought a vibrancy and positive atmosphere to the area. Artist Sioux Tempestt, with the assistance of two other artists, painted the artwork over six days with the aim to add colour to the outdoor space that people found uplifting and relaxing. Inspired by researching human cells, nerve endings and tissue, Sioux found microscopic medical views fascinating and beautiful. She was also inspired by the nearby Kings Park and its array of native plants, using them to generate organic abstracted shapes. "These two categories of elements were combined to indicate the intertwining of humans with the natural environment in which we inhabit," she said. Celebrating our dedicated staff 23 October 2023 Congratulations to Travis Walker, Financial and Business Officer in the Revenue and Accounts Receivable team, who has been awarded the NMHS Corporate Employee of the Quarter award. Travis was nominated for his ability to drive innovation within his team. He has been instrumental in the development of a new model that allows the Revenue and Accounts Receivable team to access relevant information at the click of a button. This new model has driven performance and helped identify key areas of focus. Travis has also developed a model that provides real time WebPAS data to drive private patient conversions. So far it has led to a 20 per cent increase in private patient conversions. Congratulations WA Mental Health Awards finalist Ronnie Deng 17 October 2023 The finalists for this year's WA Mental Health Awards have been announced, recognising Ronnie Deng in the category Lived Experience Impact and Inspiration Award. He was nominated by advocacy group Mental Health Matters 2 for his local and national contributions as a carer, mentor and voice helping the community understand and navigate the mental health care system. Ronnie immigrated from Singapore in 1976 and has been involved with mental health for more than 30 years. He has worked on a casual basis with the North Metropolitan Health Service, specifically Graylands Hospital since 2016 as carer representative and Lived Experience Consultant. Ronnie became involved after his wife was admitted to Graylands Hospital and he struggled to understand what was happening and how he could help.
